UNFINISHED LIFE—Saturday & Sunday, February 25 and 26. The music of Kate Wolf, the Sonoma County folksinger who died in the early 80s of cancer, springs to life in this brand new choral work. Weaving together some of Wolf’s best-beloved songs (Give Yourself to Love, Across the Great Divide, Love Still Remains and others), Unfinished Life will be premiered here at the Glaser Center by the California Redwood Chorale. Composed by Randall Keith Horton, the piece celebrates the songwriter’s life and singular voice. The show on Saturday, February 25, is at 8 pm, and the Sunday matinee is at 3 pm. Tickets are $20 in advance, and $25 at the door. Or at brownpapertickets.com for Saturday or Sunday
SCRIPTURE STUDY - Feb. 28th at 8 a.m. or 5:30 pm. All are welcome!! Next we will read Chapters 1 - 4 of the Cambridge Platform, the founding document of the Puritan churches of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Most of those churches, as you may know, became Unitarian in the 1800s, but none of them changed their system of congregational governance. Indeed, we abide by it still. We'll learn a lot about why UUs do things the way we do, and pick up some useful history along the way. Copies will be available in class, or it can be found online at www.americanphilosophy.net/cambridge_platform.htm. Background information is available on Wikipedia and at www.uuworld.org/ideas/articles/108175.shtml.
DON'T THROW AWAY THAT CHRISTMAS ORCHID! Instead, Ann Chambers invites you to a workshop on February 25th at 2 p.m. in the Social Hall. We will be discussing "Grocery Store" Orchids. Learn the needs of most common types of orchids: some like it warm, some like it cool, some like lots of moist moss, some prefer bark. Recognize the best kind of pot to put them in and the best location in your house, with proper light and temperatures that will keep your orchid happy and blooming over and over. Ann will demonstrate how to re-pot an orchid or two, getting them out of the tiny plastic pot that most come in and into a true orchid pot where their roots can do their thing. There will be handouts! You are welcome to bring one of your orchids for an evaluation.
THE TAO TE CHING study group will meet from 9:00 until 10:00 am in the Board Room on Tuesday, February 21st. All are welcome. Bring a copy of the Tao if you have one and your own coffee. There are translations free for e-reader, or on the web, for example, here: www.abuddhistlibrary.com/Buddhism/J%20-%20Navigation%20Pages%20and%20A%20List%20of%20Books/Navigation%20Pages/Lists%20of%20Files/The%20Tao%20Te%20Ching.htm. NEW ART SHOW—Many thanks to Maite Klein, whose gorgeous photos of Spain and Flamenco dancers have adorned our halls for the last several months. And now . . . we welcome a vibrant new exhibition featuring a pair of Santa Rosa artists. Jamie Mitsu Poulsen and Alicia Lopez de Oceguera have been friends for several years. Three years ago, they began going out once a week, choosing different corners of their Roseland community to paint. These paintings are colorful, energetic, and full of warmth and joy. Roseland, for good or bad, has changed quite a bit since these two friends began painting, and these works of art capture a place that is already different from what it was. Some of the buildings shown here are no longer standing. We are fortunate to have this wonderful exhibition on our walls. There is a space in the foyer where you can leave notes to the artists, and we invite you to join us for a reception in February, details to be announced.
HOW I LEARNED TO DRIVE —Last fall, the theater department of Sonoma State University presented a play, on campus, that electrified the students and drew the attention of the whole community, leading to sell-out crowds and long lines of people seeking tickets. The show was Paula Vogel’s extraordinary drama ‘How I Learned to Drive,’ a beloved 1997 off-Broadway hit about difficult subjects, made lyrically accessible, even uplifting and humane, in the poetic words of Vogel. In the play a grown woman narrates the story of her Southern youth, growing up a misfit in a family that does not understand her. Known as Lil’ Bit, she strikes up a relationship with her Uncle Peck, who begins giving her driving lessons, forays into personal freedom that quickly lead Lil’ Bit into uncharted territory. With surprising humor and shattering honesty, the play shows how this young woman grows into a self-determined survivor, without losing sight of the wounded, broken humanity of the man from whom she learned to drive and, in a sense, to finally stand up for herself. SSU’s production of ‘How I Learned to Drive’ will be presented here in our Sanctuary, in a full theatrical production, on Friday, February 24, at 7:30 p.m. A fundraiser for the UUCSR, tickets are $15 general (in advance, $20 at the door) and $10 for seniors and students ($15 at the door). Listening devices will be available. Tickets also available on-line at brownpapertickets.com/event/224534.
